1998, Nominations sought for 1999 Women Committeed to Excellence Awards, Nov. 12, No. 1
TUSCALOOSA - The Tombigbee Girl Scout Council is seeking nominations for its 1999 Women Committed to Excellence Awards Program. This competitive awards program recognizes women for achievements in the following categories: Distinguished Young Woman (for women under 30 years of age); Career Accomplishments /Contributions; Community Contributions; Outstanding Educator; and Lifetime Achievement. There is also a merit noncompetitive division to honor other outstanding women. There is no nomination fee. Deadline for nominations is January 22, 1999.
Founded in 1987 by the Tombigbee Council, WCE’s purpose is to honor women whose accomplishments and contributions distinguish them as role models for Girl Scouts in the eleven West Alabama counties served by the Tombigbee Girl Scout Council, which include Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marengo, Marion, Perry, Pickens, Sumter and Tuscaloosa counties. Any individual, or employer, civic organization or agency throughout West Alabama may submit nominations. Candidates for the awards must be a least 18 years old and must have demonstrated exceptional achievements in their careers or in community service.
nominees may be professionally employed by or serve as volunteers for non-profit organizations. In addition, they must also reside in one of the eleven counties served by the Tombigbee Girl Scout Council. An independent panel of business and community leaders will review all nominations. Winners will be announced prior to the March 5 luncheon and awards presentation to be held at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel in Tuscaloosa.

Last year’s recipients include Lucy G. Jordan for Lifetime Achievement, Dr. Joyce Vance Jolly by Shelton State Community College for Career Accomplishments, Ree hale Almon for Community Contributions, Suzanne Poole for Distinguished Young Woman, and Dee Hicks for Outstanding Educator.
